The Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA) has shut down thepokies.net, a major unlawful wagering platform aimed at Australians. The website, featuring online casino-style games, was believed to generate substantial revenue, with an estimated 30,000 Australian visitors monthly. The ACMA received multiple grievances regarding the platform, including reports of considerable monetary setbacks and challenges in accessing winnings. The regulatory body emphasized that restricting access to such websites conveys a clear message of their commitment to taking action against illicit operators targeting Australian citizens. Since 2017, the ACMA has been actively combating illegal offshore gambling, resulting in the withdrawal of over 160 websites from the Australian market.

Authorities are taking a hard line against illicit online betting platforms. They are restricting entry to these platforms and collaborating with internet service providers to take them offline. Furthermore, they are pursuing the operators of these platforms and informing the public about the risks associated with unlawful gambling.
